Alt Hotel Winnipeg is a guest’s (and Instagrammer’s) dream

You’d be hard pressed to find a cooler hotel in Canada — nay, all of North America — than the Alt Hotel Winnipeg.

Having celebrated its first year in Winnipeg in April, the Alt has already become the hotel of note — just ask National Geographic Traveler in their article on Winnipeg being one of the 20 Best Trips for 2016 — when you are looking to be part of all the action of downtown Winnipeg while staying in style.

As National Geographic Traveler states in the “Where to Stay” section:

“The 20-story Alt Hotel, which opened in April 2015, is arguably the coolest recent addition to downtown. Located near the Exchange District and across the street from the MTS Centre, the city’s major sports and entertainment venue, the 160-room Alt blends local flavor and an ultrahip, minimalist aesthetic. The lobby art installation features more than 2,000 images by Winnipeg photographer Bryan Scott, and rooms and common areas have lots of bare cement walls and natural light.”

All the rooms are just $149/per night, no matter what the date is, or what is going on in the city.

What that gets you — along with being right in the middle of Winnipeg’s SHED (more on that to come) — is access to free bikes in which to explore the city, a well-equipped gym that’s open 24 hours a day, parking for one vehicle, continental breakfast, free wifi, and right now for the summer (until August 31) the ability to check out whenever you want — so feel free to hit the town for a late night then sleep in on their insanely comfortable beds.

But, maybe don’t sleep that day away, because right outside the Alt Winnipeg’s doors the SHED (Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District) awaits.

For starters, 115 steps across the street (the good people at the Alt have counted) is the MTS Centre, so you really can’t beat this hotel for some of the big upcoming shows like Demi Lovato & Nick Jonas (August 29), Ice Age on Ice (September 9-11), Dolly Parton (September 12) and Kanye West (October 12).

We should also mention that before or after a show, you best get yourself a table at the Alt Hotel Winnipeg’s restaurant The Merchant Kitchen, where crazy good cocktails and a menu of elevated global street food awaits — including the best Korean fried chicken and a super food salad that will blow your mind.

Back to the SHED, the Alt was used as our jumping-off point point for an Instagram photo tour Tourism Winnipeg hosted with Downtown Winnipeg Biz two weeks ago with some local photographers (photos from which are featured in this article). The purpose was to highlight the stunning transformation that has occurred — and is still occurring — in the centre of our city.

One stop on the tour — just two blocks from the Alt — was Millennium Library Square, where you can find the beautiful Emptyful water installation, bistro tables, loungers, and a grass covered plot where Downtown Winnipeg Biz regularly runs their Fitness in the Park series that features zumba, boot camps, pilates, and yoga.

The area is also filled with restaurants, bars, places to bring the kids like the Manitoba Museum and The Forks — both of which are just a short walk away — along with everything else you’d want when staying in Winnipeg.

Plus, as you can see, for you hip Instagrammers out there, this place (and area) is a photographer’s dream.

ALT Hotel Winnipeg is located at 310 Donald Street.
