Lower Fort Garry
National Historic Site
Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site is an
iconic 19th century fur trade-era fort poised
decisively above Manitoba's infamous Red River.
The fort's stone walls and historic buildings were
established in the eastern edge of the vast
Canadian prairies.
Celebrated as an important site of firsts,
Lower Fort Garry is where the first of the
numbered treaties was made with the region's
First Nations groups. It was also the first training
centre for the North-West Mounted Police in
1873, and years later the location of Manitoba's
first prison and asylum.
New this summer, you can experience our Friday
Campfire Series. Gather around the campfire
for Stories at Sunset: An evening of local tales
and traditional treats. Journey to the fort after
dark for behind-the-scenes Ghost Tours of the
site, and learn how to make your own beer
using a traditional recipe with our Open Flame
Brewing workshop.
Our end-of-season Harvest Festival is back and
better than ever in August. Shop our farmers'
market filled with local vendors and artisans.
Get hands-on making chocolate, pulling
candles, or baking bannock in one of our
heritage workshops.
Our regular offer of on-site programs are flexible
and able to accommodate groups with special
interests and busy schedules. Book a private
guided tour or explore the site on your own.
Lower Fort Garry offers ample free motorcoach
parking and complimentary admission for a
tour escort and driver. A restaurant, gift shop,
programming, facility rentals and English and
French language services are available on site.
