Tourism is a key economic driver for Winnipeg, attracting approximately 3.5 million domestic visitors annually and resulting in an estimated $609 million in direct expenditures. The tourism industry in Winnipeg employs more than 48,000 people and results in an economic impact of $2.3 billion in GDP. Tourism Winnipeg, a division of Economic Development Winnipeg, Inc., is responsible for a variety of tourism- related initiatives to increase visitation. The team's primary role includes collaborating with community and industry stakeholders, and leading efforts to attract meetings and conventions, sports and special events, travel trade, and leisure travellers to Winnipeg. The majority of activities are invested in the meetings, conventions, sports, special events and group travel markets in order to provide the greatest return on investment, as these visitors have the highest average daily spend per person.
