14 2020 Destination Marketing Plan and Partnership Opportunities Dan Harper Sales activities Tourism Winnipeg's sales activities include prospecting, in-person sales meetings, follow-up calls, distribution of sales kits, relationship building, presentations, proposals and bids, customized site inspections, economic impact studies, advertising programs and event servicing. A concerted effort has been made to partner with provincial sport organizations as they are integral to hosting regional, national and international sports events. Tourism Winnipeg will also focus sales activities with cultural arts communities for special events. Winnipeg sport tourism advisory committee Tourism Winnipeg will continue to collaborate with local leaders to target high-profile sports and special events. The committee takes a cohesive approach to event attraction to further position Winnipeg as a world-class host city that offers robust coaching and professional sport expertise, superior sport infrastructure and a broad volunteer base. Sport organizations Tourism Winnipeg will continue to meet with Sport Manitoba's individual sport executive directors and university sports organizations on a regular basis to strengthen relationships and foster ongoing communications in order to encourage these groups to submit bids to host regional, national and international sports events. Sports forum Tourism Winnipeg will host a sports forum workshop for provincial and university sports organizations to share industry updates and tools that can be used to attract regional, national and international sports events to Winnipeg. Responses to request for proposals (RFP) and bid presentations Tourism Winnipeg will continue to advance the quality and effectiveness of RFP and bids through Simpleview, Tourism Winnipeg's customer relations management system. Tourism Winnipeg has developed a new video tutorial for stakeholders that provides step- by-step instructions on how to submit the best possible proposal that will result in a higher success rate. The video is available through our Extranet site for partners. Tourism Winnipeg and stakeholders responded to 12 RFPs and bids for future in 2019 as of June 30, representing 7,600 participants, 14,500 room nights and $3.8 million in estimated economic impact. Sports and special event servicing Tourism Winnipeg offers services to sports and special events to ensure participants optimize tourism opportunities during their stay in Winnipeg. A service toolkit for organizers provides pre-event promotional information about Winnipeg, as well as a visitor information booth for citywide sports and special events. New tools include custom landing pages for the organization's website, e-blasts to frontline staff, tailored itinerary building and a flash-your-participant badge program for discounts at various attractions. Sales initiatives Tourism Winnipeg will attend the following key sport initiatives and sponsored events to promote Winnipeg as a sports and special event destination. Tourism Winnipeg will also attend local sports events and annual general meetings to encourage organizations to bring their events to Winnipeg. 2020 sports sales initiatives (subject to change) March 24 – 26 Sport Events Congress, Ottawa, ON May Sales Blitz, Ottawa, ON Fall Eastern Consortium, Ottawa, ON Sports and special events marketing Tourism Winnipeg will continue to produce dynamic Winnipeg content featuring the latest developments and value propositions that promote Winnipeg as a major sports and special events destination. Tourism Winnipeg will use its attendance-building materials and video testimonials to position Winnipeg as a viable destination. Other promotional materials, such as signage and digital content, will be created to support the sales and sponsorship activities. Website Tourism Winnipeg will continue to enhance the sport tourism website www.wininwinnipeg.com in order to increase engagement and for ease of use. A sports facility directory has been added to the search function that is ideally suited for organizations seeking information on the city's offerings. Sports and special events trends Winnipeg is currently ranked as the seventh-best Canadian sport city to host national events and sixth best overall according to the 2019 Global Sports Impact Canada Index Report. According to the Sports Planning Guide, these are the latest trends: › Emerging sports – non-traditional sports are becoming more established, such as pickleball, BMX racing, quidditch and ultimate. › Creating owned events – small and mid-size markets are creating their own events, such as music festivals, rallies and emerging sports, as event rights fees continue to escalate for large-scale events. › Bricks and mortar – tourism-related taxes continue to fund the development of large multi-sport complexes. › Facility revamps – golf real estate and big box retail locations are being converted into facilities for sports. › Safety – background checks for officials, board members and volunteers have increased as athlete safety has been brought to the forefront.
