Culinary Guide "I just came back from Winnipeg and was super impressed. I thought the restaurants would be 'good for Winnipeg,' but they're good for Canada... the ones they have that are highly rated are great."–mijun pak, top chef canada judge Nationally acclaimed Winnipeg's culinary scene has seemingly always been celebrated, as our mid-sized city continues to serve up restaurants that would receive rave reviews in North America's largest metropolises. Take for instance Segovia, which has always been on Canada's 100 Best restaurant list since its inception. Chef Adam Donnelly's food is nothing short of spectacular, ensuring the 40-seat room fills up fast. They don't take reservations, but you can leave your name at the door then explore the many bars and lounges of Osborne Village while you wait for your table. Some of the original Segovia crew — including owners Carolina Conrad, sister Raya Conrad, and chef Chris Gama — have gone on to open Clementine, which the Globe and Mail has raved as being one of the country's best brunch spots. It also made Air Canada's enRoute magazine's long list for Canada's best new restaurants. A mainstay on those enRoute lists is chef Scott Bagshaw, who has landed in the top 10 with Enoteca, on the long list for Máquè, and most-recently Passero, which also received five-stars in the Winnipeg Free Press. All three of his elegant, intimate, small plate, wine bars offer excellent service and plating akin to an impressionist painting. Winnipeg's most recent entrant on the enRoute long list is Oxbow, a natural wine bar and small plates restaurant situated in a gorgeous room on South Osborne, which surely has one of the city's best culinary scenes (other notables include BMC Market's authentic tacos from Mexico, and Black Market Provisions' to-go goods like vegan ice creams, soups, and spreads). Some of the Oxbow crew have come from (or were associated with) The Roost on Corydon, which is an amazing cocktail and small plates bar, so amazing in fact you'll currently find it on the Canada's 100 Best list as the 27th best bar in the country. A few blocks north from Oxbow is Chaeban Ice Cream, where Lebanese-Syrian couple Joseph Chaeban and Zainab Ali have won a slew of awards for their house- made creations, several of which play homage to their Middle Eastern homeland. The pair picked up Western Living's Foodies of the Year 2018 after only been open for a year at the time. Another Winnipeg mainstay on Canada's 100 Best restaurant list is deer + almond, where chef Mandel Hitzer has made a name for himself with whimsical small plates that defy genres. Around the world in 80 plates Winnipeg, being a city with a robust Francophone history and an abundance of French speakers, excels in French fare.
