The morning at the zoo's Journey to Churchill entails seeing how northern animals like Arctic fox, polar bears, seals, muskox, and snowy owls have adapted to extreme conditions, and how climate change can affect their well-being. From there, it's on to an afternoon at the Manitoba Museum, where students can discover how Inuit survived and made tools using limited resources like skin, stone and bone. For dinner that night, head to local institution Stella's, which has seven locations located throughout the city. Stella's specializes in local and sustainable products whenever possible, while its menu tailors to all tastes and intolerances. DAY 3 The mission at Oak Hammock Marsh is to connect people with wetlands, which happens almost instantaneously when you look out over the vast marsh and hear the sounds from up to 300 species of birds, countless amphibians, and the dozens of mammals who call this place home. This globally significant Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) was designed to be a key migratory habitat and waterfowl-breeding centre, and on the Bird in the Hand Experience you'll discover why. On this interactive tour, students literally get to feel tiny feathers flutter in the palm of their hands before releasing a newly banded songbird into the wild (all part of important migratory research). The experience of heading out into the wetlands on canoes where the smell of blooming wildflowers and close encounters with colourful birds perched atop cattails are on the agenda. At FortWhyte Alive, Winnipeg's award-winning nature reserve, group eco tours combine nature, history and culture. Experiences include a guided bison safari over prairie grasses where you'll get up-close to these huge animals, playing traditional Inuit games, and learning basic wilderness survival skills. That night, students will have to keep their wits about them as they embark on the Trolley of Terror Ghost Tour. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes and a renowned paranormal investigator, once dubbed Winnipeg as being one of the best places in the world for "great psychic potential." During this 2.5-hour tour, students will hop aboard this 1930s-streetcart- inspired trolley and discover the other worldly spirits and haunting stories that left him so convinced.
