Financial services Financial services are an important component of the Manitoba economy and generated $3.5 billion in GDP in 2018, or 5.6 per cent of the province's $62.7 billion GDP 1 . Manitoba's financial services sector ranked fifth after Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. Between 2014 and 2018, Manitoba's financial services sector GDP grew 9.8 per cent from $3.2 billion in 2014 to $3.5 billion in 2018. The three largest financial services subsectors in Manitoba are credit intermediation and monetary authorities ($1.5 billion), insurance carriers and related activities ($1.1 billion), and financial investment services, funds and other financial vehicles ($721 million). Subsector focus Insurance, fintech Target markets/audiences Businesses, site selectors and CEOs in the financial services and fintech sectors Primary Canada and United States Industry collaboration YES! Winnipeg (YW) will continue to be an active supporter and collaborator with key industry partners such as: Global Affairs Canada (GAC)/Trade Commissioner Service and Invest in Canada Having collaborated with GAC on past events, there remains the possibility of future FDI partnerships with investment officers based on their visits to Winnipeg in 2018. Province of Manitoba (multiple departments including Economic Devlopment & Training) Continue working to support key files related to client requirements and funding programs. City of Winnipeg Support on client files related to permitting, tax increment financing and other requests. Government of Canada Seek funding for program support. Post-secondary institutions (University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Red River College, Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology) Pursue talent development and collaboration with industry to meet skilled workforce requirements. Risk Management Association (RMA) A not-for-profit, member-driven professional association, whose sole purpose is to advance the use of sound risk principles in the financial services industry. RMA hosts regular networking breakfast events and has relevant connections into the industry. Business development activities YW's business development activities include prospecting, in-person meetings, follow-up calls, relationship building, presentations, proposals and pitches, tracking, customized site inspections and servicing. Business retention and expansion Thirty local companies have been identified for business retention and expansion (BRE) interviews and intelligence gathering, for actionable insights and services offered. For 2020, four BRE interviews are slated to take place. Sector activities » Majority of focus will be on assisting local financial service companies with their technology transformations and change management. » Identifying financing options for businesses, especially startups.
