Boon Burger Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company: The Forks North Portage Partnership Culinary Itinerary ◗ Half Day ●Full Day 1 Arrive hungry when visiting the hip and trendy neighbourhood of Osborne Village. This densely populated neighbourhood was recently named Canada's Greatest Neighbourhood by the Canadian Institute of Planners, and is packed with restaurants. Unburger's healthy, gourmet burgers are piled high with unique toppings from pineapple to blue cheese to beets. Nosh on a side of sweet yam fries and choice of dips, including ultimate chili aioli and honey dill. For an eclectic menu in a funky space, head to Dead Fish Café. Start with an order of curried avocado cream tequila sauce mussels before diving into a parmesan-crusted pickerel sandwich. Finish with the heavenly chocolate chip banana bread pudding smothered in decadent dark rum caramel. Grab a thirst-quenching pint and settle in at local watering hole The Toad in the Hole, where traditional pub grub from chicken pot pie to fish and chips is served. If you're looking to satisfy a sweet tooth, head to Kawaii Crepe across the street. Here, crêpes are stuffed with ingredients such as Nutella, fruit and marshmallows. They are served Japanese-style— rolled up in a crispy ice cream cone shape. Wake up your taste buds and start off at The Forks—Winnipeg's most popular tourist destination. Grab breakfast to go at Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company inside The Forks Market. Savour this organic bakery's famous sticky-sweet cinnamon buns or divine flaky cheese croissants. Pair it with a freshly-made fruit shake from the Smoothie Bar at The Forks, or cup of joe from Human Bean Coffee & Tea shop. Stroll to Confusion Corner, where you'll find the entry to Corydon Avenue, also known as "Little Italy." This bustling strip used to be packed with Italian eateries, but has evolved to represent a cornucopia of global cuisines. Keep cool and walk with a scoop of Argentinean gelato in hand from Eva's Gelato. The dulce de leche is its specialty. Join the crowds and people-watch on the patio at Colosseo, a staple on the avenue renowned for its classic Italian dishes, such cannelloni, scalopinne marinara and pizza. A relative newcomer to Corydon, The Loft Gastropub oozes sophistication with its slick interior, while offering a more casual atmosphere on the patio. Dine on upscale comfort food, such as lip-smacking Jack Daniels ribs, or a spicy po' boy sandwich with crispy calamari and beer-battered pickerel. Greek eats at Niko's are another ethnic option in the area. This diner's tender chicken souvlaki is seasoned to perfection, while the lemon potatoes have an addictive hint of acidity. Complete the evening with a bottle of wine on the intimate patio surrounded by lush shrubbery at Mise Bistro Lounge. 26 Winnipeg While at the market, browse for vino at Fenton's Wine Merchants, snack on some freshly made fudge from The Fudge Guy, or take home a bottle of cold-pressed organic sunflower oil from Grass Roots Prairie Kitchen. Next, go to the architecturally rich Exchange District for lunch. For a taste of the middle east, head to Shawarma Khan, owned by former CFL Winnipeg Blue Bomber Obby Khan. Seasoned and shaved pieces of chicken or lamb/beef are wrapped with complementary sauces and crunchy veggies. Tabbouleh and fatoush salad are refreshing sides. Tastes from the opposite side of the world are represented at Corrientes Argentinean Pizzeria. Golden empanadas crammed with tasty fillings from smoked salmon to béchamel sauce to caramelized apple pack a thrilling flavour punch. Thin, thick and gluten-free crusts form the perfect crispy base for Argentineinspired pizzas—top them with hard-boiled eggs, pesto, goat cheese, buffalo mozzarella and more. Fresh and casual lunch fare is the specialty at Underground Café. Walk down the steps to this colourful, buzzing eatery and fill up on the fabulous sun burger—a vegetarian patty served on a toasted bagel with dill sauce and veggies. Stick to the downtown area in the evening for a fabulous dinner. Rudy's Eat + Drink's decor offers a modern twist on the "Mad Men" era, while serving up classic dishes from Steak Diane to devilled eggs. Italian food lovers will swoon over the contemporary creations served at fine dining establishment Amici. Savour tender grilled lamb chops or linguine in tomato broth brimming with seafood. Traditional tiramisu finishes off any meal with a sweet flourish. If you're searching for a cosmopolitan vibe, Lobby on York fits the bill. Prime cuts of beef, rack of lamb and seafood selections make up the menu of this chic restaurant. The pulled duck quesadilla with brie, peppers and sesame is a must-try appetizer. 2013 Spring/Summer Events & Itineraries Guide
