Air Force Heritage Museum and Air Park w Enjoy the largest air park in Canada which includes mounted military aircraft from the history of Canada's Air Force. The free Air Force Heritage Museum, situated on the ground floor of 1 Canadian Air Division headquarters (the Bishop Building) contains many outstanding exhibits of national significance. North of Sharp Boulevard (Air Force Way) off Ness Avenue – St. James | Airport tel: 204.833.2500 ext 4180 Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine w This is Canada's second martyr's shrine. The beautiful chapel contains the relics (mortal remains) of the Ukrainian Catholic martyr, Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky. Beatified by Pope John Paul II, Blessed Vasyl—a Ukranian Catholic—suffered severe torture during the Soviet regime and died in Winnipeg in 1973. A museum depicting the martyr's life story is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 250 Jefferson Avenue (St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church) – North End tel: 204.338.7321 email: info@bvmartyrshrine.com www.bvmartyrshrine.com Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg w Among the oldest fire stations in Canada, this beautifully maintained fire hall, built in 1903, features stained glass windows and ornate tin ceilings. As a tribute to the heroism of firefighters, the museum displays hand and horse-drawn, steam and early motorized fire apparatus, artifacts, photographs and records dating back to the 1880s. Grant's Old Mill w See a working replica of Cuthbert Grant's original water-powered mill, built in 1829. During the summer months wheat is ground into flour. The mill celebrates Grant and the Métis culture the second Saturday in July with a BBQ and activities. A pioneer picnic is held on the second Saturday in August. 2777 Portage Avenue – St. James tel: 204.986.5613 (summer) 204.253.4904 (winter) The Historical Museum of St. James-Assiniboia w The historically designated two-storey Red River Frame Brown House built in 1856, is furnished with period pieces from 1860 - 1890. HBC employee William Brown and his Métis wife, Charlotte Oman, raised six children in the house with details of their life accounted in the museum's historiography. The historic 1911 Municipal Hall Building features fascinating vignettes and displays from early trade to the development of Unicity in the St. James–Assiniboia area. The 1890's Interpretive Centre is the third building within the complex, where visitors learn about butter making, blacksmithing, farming, and early modes of pioneer transportation. The Museum holds specialty historical theatre throughout summer for groups by appointment. A free Pioneer Heritage Day is held in August. Open year round. By appointment only. 200 McGregor Street – North End tel: 204.589.4397 Living Prairie Museum w The museum is a 13 hectare endangered tall grass prairie preserve located inside the city. Set aside in 1968 as a remnant of original tall grass prairie, this preserve is home to more than 160 species of prairie wildflowers, grasses and shrubs with a great array of wildlife. Explore this endangered ecosystem with "Naturalist Knapsacks," which are full of fun equipment and free to borrow while on site. 2795 Ness Avenue – St. James tel: 204.832.0167 email: prairie@winnipeg.ca www.livingprairie.ca Louis Riel's Tomb w Visit the resting place of Louis Riel, Métis leader and founder of the province of Manitoba. 190 avenue de la Cathédrale (St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery) – Old St. Boniface | Winnipeg's French Quarter Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada w History will unfold before your eyes at this restored 19th-century fort where costumed staff recreate the 1850s in the Red River Valley. Come and meet the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company as he strolls through his garden, barter with the company clerk, sit in a tipi and listen to the whispers of ancient legends. Touch the coarse fur of a bison hide at the oldest stone fur-trading post in North America, or if you prefer, scour the fort for clues in a family scavenger hunt or explore the new interactive exhibit in the Visitor Reception Centre. There is something here for the whole family. Living-history programs run throughout the summer to Labour Day from 9  a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours in English and French and motorized access for mobility challenged visitors available. The site is open to groups for tours, weddings or meetings by pre-registration.
