For several years in a row, Site Selection
magazine has included Winnipeg on its
"Best Locations in Canada" list. In January
2020, it also noted Winnipeg's growing tech
sector was on the rise and increasingly
appealing to international talent.
In a world of climate change, natural
disasters and political upheaval, investors
are looking for diverse, stable and secure
economies that will safeguard their
investment for the long term. They also
need jurisdictions offering accessible and
affordable resources, secure transportation
and shipping routes and a pipeline to a
strong talent pool and business-friendly
incentives. Winnipeg offers all these
opportunities and more.
"At the top of the list for investors is how
a city responds to major disruptions like
natural disasters," says Alberto Velasco-
Acosta, YES! Winnipeg's (YW) Director of
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). "We know
our province is well prepared to handle
future flooding with our well-engineered
floodway, earthquakes are not a concern
and even our winter temperatures offer
a predictable stability that can be an
advantage for companies cooling data
centres or testing products."
In early 2020, YW's FDI team had a
chance to showcase Winnipeg's economic
strengths and its strong business community
when Global Affairs Canada investment
officers visited our city. They were from
Canadian embassies in seven different
countries including Germany, Mexico and
the United States.
