Winnipeg St o ry Ideas Design and Haberdashery ce Des i gn fl ee L or n a Manitobah Mukluks Lilyfe i ld C ake Winnipeg has been home to designers and innovators that have shaped how we view the world, all while making it just a little more beautiful. The infamous Peter Nygard revolutionized women's wear in the 1980s, recognizing the fashion needs of all women at a time when designers were only catering to women in their 20s. Beyond his clothing, Nygard remains a figure of fascination thanks to his colourful past. Local jewellery designer Hilary Druxman not only creates stunning works in silver, she has become recognized for her good-Samaritan business practices. She has designed fundraising pieces for Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the West End and Assiniboine Park. Julie Pederson's urban mukluks have become the rage with Hollywood starlets and some of the biggest names in the business. Featuring bold colours and funky adornments, these ultra-hip boots were even spied on Britney Spears during her recent cross-Canada tour. Winnipeg-based milliner Crown Cap has been keeping heads warm and fashionable with its iconic hunters' cap since 1934. Originally a textile headwear manufacturer for the farming trade, today Crown Cap ships two million hats around the globe every year. They have a showroom at Macy's, Lord and Taylor, and Bloomingdales, and have created a line for Polo Ralph Lauren, among other top-name brands. Winnipeg company Asham Curling Supplies is the only company in Canada that manufactures curling shoes, which they distribute worldwide. Celebrity favourite denim brand Silver Jeans Co. is a division of Winnipeg business Western Glove Works, a family-owned business that has produced denim products for 90 years. The brand's first silhouette, the Frisco, went on to sell more than two million pairs. Inspired by aboriginal art, a Lorna Design fleece is no ordinary jacket. These highly sought-after pieces are embellished with intricate, colourful appliqués, hand stitched by skilled and loving hands. Born in East Africa, two sets of brothers, who were pushed out by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, found refuge in Canada. It was during a record-setting storm in Winnipeg that these two brothers hunkered down in a basement and conceived a homemade t-shirt business, later selling the shirts from pushcarts at the beach. Two years later, Mondetta's "flag shirt" was born, paving the way for a globally conscious clothing company renowned for its designs and fashion forward thinking. In 1944, a Russian-born immigrant named Abram Albert DeFehr began making simple wooden pieces in the basement of his Winnipeg home. Within a few years, the business moved into a former chicken barn. This became Palliser Furniture's first factory. Today, Palliser is one of the most recognized brands in North America. It all started with just a cake inside a hatbox, but Heather Stewart of Lilyfield Cakes quickly rose to fame when her beautifully decorated boxes became de rigueur amongst Hollywood's elite. She's flown them to A-listers around the world and counts Halle Berry and the Obamas amongst her regular customers.
