Price Industries The Winnipeg-based global leader in HVAC systems operated at full capacity to develop and manufacture a fan filter unit that pulls air out of an enclosed environment, then safely filters it through an exhaust vent or to the outdoors. Price also offered access to its team of engineers to both levels of government and its 29,000 sq. ft. research facility in Winnipeg, which contains test chambers to mimic hospital operating rooms. The technology it developed could prove crucial for temporary hospital spaces, nursing stations or areas of hospitals used during the pandemic and beyond. PCL Construction When the pandemic hit, the company's special projects division set out to devise highly mobile, medical-grade isolation pods that could serve to house COVID-19 patients. The result was 20 to 40 ft. shipping containers— dubbed Quaran-Tin Pods—which could host up to five hospital beds and combine easily to make multiple attached spaces to accommodate additional equipment. The temporary pods were also designed to require minimal infrastructure and time to install. PCL also worked with other Winnipeg subcontractors and suppliers, including Price Industries, which supplied the HVAC system to ensure the units could also be effectively heated or cooled and sterilized. Duha Group This Winnipeg manufacturer with a global reach, specializing in colour marketing tools and printing, adapted its line to make and sell hand sanitizer to local businesses in need. One hundred per cent of the profits from its hand sanitizer went back to helping local health care workers and patients through the HSC Foundation's, COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund. Good Local This startup by entrepreneur Obby Khan gave a much- needed boost to businesses anxious to get their products into the hands of customers at one of the busiest retail times of the year during a code red lockdown. Goodlocal. ca went online right before the holidays highlighting all things local, from beard oil to Manitoba-made snacks, art pieces, clothing and fresh groceries. The site had just 100 vendors when it first went online in November 2020, but now has more than 450 vendors, eight full-time staff and 12 part-time staff. NFI Group Within the span of three or four months, teams across NFI Group (NFI) researched, assembled, tested and launched an entire line of Clean and Protect products to assist with the prevention of COVID-19 transmission. Products were developed or modified to keep buses and motor coaches safe and on the road during the pandemic. NFI's products are becoming the new standard in sanitization and NFI has secured the exclusive rights to supply hydrogen peroxide generators to other coach operators and transit agencies in the industry.
