42 Economic Development Winnipeg brand guide Writing style Economic Development Winnipeg, YES! Winnipeg and Tourism Winnipeg follow the copy guidelines set out by the Canadian Press (CP). We recognize there are different writing styles used across all our platforms including informal language. We also have a specific brand voice for each platform (see pages 39-41). This copy guide outlines style used across all platforms including suggestions to avoid mistakes we commonly see around punctuation and grammar. We have noted where style does not follow CP-style but is an EDW-style choice. Acronyms / initials » Always spell out acronyms in full on their first usage, followed by the acronym in parentheses. Economic Development Winnipeg (EDW) » Do not use an acronym if it is not repeated at least once more. Stand-alone acronyms do not need to be abbreviated. Never use an acronym without spelling it out first. » The proper acronyms for our departments are EDW, TW and YW. Ampersands (&) » Never use them in text copy unless they are part of a formal company name or title. President & CEO, Economic Development Winnipeg » Do not use as a substitute for the word "and." » May be used as a design element. COVID-19 response & recovery snapshot (title in an annual report) Area codes » In any articles, blogs or documents area codes and phone numbers will be noted the following ways: » Area code always in parentheses, with no dash between the area code and seven- digit number. (204) 954-1961 » Always include the area code with a phone number. » If writing for an international audience, add the country number as well. 1 (204) 954-1961 » Design exception note: Our email signature will continue to be presented in any branded pieces going to stakeholders/partners in the following way: 204.954.1988 Copy guide
