Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park In 1870 at HBC Upper Fort Garry a group of elected officials made a momentous decision to form the Province of Manitoba and to join the confederacy of Canada. Today, 150 years later, it is only at Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park that you can walk where those far-sighted individuals made decisions that built a country. The site has been revitalized using interpretation, art and technology to bring history to life in new and interesting ways. Plinths mark the site of buildings and a 440-foot-long corten steel wall with its interwoven threads of history and artistic icons highlight historical moments from early Indigenous people through to today, making it Canada's largest free-standing public art installation. Sound and light shows add another storytelling element. Upper Fort Garry offers a fun, new approach to history. Visit the website for free apps that open the door to the site and it's many voices. Download the apps to your phone or tablet and the history of the fort's buildings and historical icons on the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Heritage Wall will be right in your hand in 11 languages – English, French, Cree, Ojibwa, Ukrainian, German, Arabic, Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese. A unique spot in Canada's history with a fresh and welcoming approach.
