The Forks The Forks is Manitoba's number one tourist destination, attracting more than four million visitors annually. The 54-acre site offers year- round shopping at The Forks Market and Johnston Terminal, along with a variety of dining experiences, including organic bakery goods, ethnic cuisine, casual restaurants, fine dining and a food hall that includes a craft beer and wine kiosk. There is a constantly changing slate of entertainment, events and many unique attractions, including a river walk, plaza, Parks Canada theatrical plays, a skateboard park, festival stage, buskers and so much more. Water taxis and a water bus operate during the summer. In winter, there is one of the world's longest skating trails with award-winning architect- designed warming huts. The Children's Museum, Manitoba Theatre for Young People and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights are also on site. The Forks is also an important national historical site when it comes to Canada's Indigenous history. The area marks the meeting of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, where artifacts dating back six millennia have shed light on the trade, fishing and bison hunting of the area's original inhabitants. The Forks celebrates Indigenous history and tells the story through year-round Indigenous programming including Oral History walking tours with Indigenous elders, powwows and other cultural celebrations like APTN's Indigenous Day Live, and significant Indigenous artwork around The Forks site, including Niimaamaa, a 30-foot sculpture at Niizhoziibean— an Ojibway word meaning two rivers, at the very place the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet. The Forks is ideally suited for any itinerary— whether booking an organized tour through Parks Canada, organizing a group meal or allotting free time to discover Winnipeg's gathering place for more than 6,000 years.
