15 LEGENDS + TALES • Volume 10 • 2022 MANDEL HITZER Eateries: deer + almond, RAW: almond, D+A Café Claim to food fame: His restaurant deer + almond is a local favourite and he's now expanded to open a chic café inside the new flagship EQ3 store. He's made several Food Network apperances and is known for RAW: almond, a pop-up restaurant that opened in winter on the frozen Red and Assiniboine Rivers. SCOTT BAGSHAW Eateries: Enoteca, Máquè, Passero/Corto Claim to food fame: Winnipeg's resident "bad boy" chef has hit home runs with his three small-plates restaurants, including Enoteca, named one of enRoute Magazine's Canada's Best New Restaurants. JOSEPH CHAEBAN AND ZAINAB ALI Eatery: Chaeban's Ice Cream Claim to food fame: These Lebanese cheese-makers specialize in premium hard ice cream made in house from scratch, with ingredients produced or grown in Manitoba. They also recently launched Chaeban Artisan, offering a selection of labneh, ricotta and feta as part of the new cheese line. MIKE ROBINS & KEEGAN MISANCHUK Eatery: One Sixteen Claim to food fame: Chefs Mike Robins and Keegan Misanchuk are the talented chefs behind hot new restaurant One Sixteen sporting a "drink- forward" menu. The two created buzz with pop- ups under the monkier Two Hands in 2021. Robins was head chef at notable restaurants Sydney's at The Forks and Sous Sol, while Misanchuk is the former chef du cuisine of beloved Segovia. JENNA AND ASHLEY ILLCHUK Bakery: Jenna Rae Cakes Claim to food fame: Martha Stewart Weddings magazine named Jenna Rae Cakes one of 20 Cake Makers to Follow on Instagram, now boasting 209k followers thanks to gorgeous photography of macarons, cakes and more. They've expanded their business to include a kiosk at The Forks, a second storefront and a stunning cookbook. CHRISTA BRUNEAU- GUENTHER Eatery: Feast Café Bistro Claim to food fame: Christa is the first in Manitoba to dish up modern fare rooted in First Nations food. She has made several guest judge appearances on shows like Top Chef Canada and Wall of Chefs. Head to this sunny West End café to savour bannock pizza, bison chili and Indian tacos.
