Here's why it matters in 2022 Winnipeg is home to major public research and development facilities including: the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, the Medical Devices National Research Centre, the Canadian Grain Commission's Grain Research Laboratory, the Canadian International Grains Institute, the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, the Canadian Centre for Agri- Food Research in Health and Medicine, the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals and the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre. Winnipeg is a leader in education and skills development. The Research Partnerships and Innovation Program offered at RRC Polytech has helped it become a leader in applied research and commercialization with its many labs, including the Vehicle Technology and Energy Centre, the Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure, the Technology Access Centre for Aerospace and Manufacturing, the Electric Vehicle Technology and Education Centre and Paterson Global Foods Institute. Pembina Trails Early College and Sisler High School's CREATE Program are nurturing the next generation of innovators with programs in software development, cyber security, coding and Interactive Digital Media. Sisler's CREATE Program has led to collaborations with Nickelodeon and Netflix. 2 1 WINNIPEG IS THE MOST INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY IN THE WORLD Winnipeg companies do some amazing things, and the world is taking notice. We beat out six other communities around the world, including two Canadian cities, on October 28, 2021 to win the World's Most Intelligent Community honour. Here's why it matters in 2022. It's not just technology that makes a community "intelligent"— it's how a community works collaboratively, to work smarter and move the needle forward on a number of things: connectivity, engagement, inclusive education and career opportunities, innovation and efforts to make a city more sustainable. Winnipeg checked all those boxes for the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), an organization backed by thought leaders like Canada's Jim Balsillie, former Cisco and IBM executive Nicola Villa and a global network of cities and regions. This is not an award a city can 'buy'—you earn it by emulating the best of the above-stated criteria. "Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies. We need to champion our city by celebrating and sharing all the things and people that make it so great," said Economic Development Winnipeg President & CEO, Dayna Spiring. "We can leverage this to attract businesses and investment here. It's a jumping-off point where we answer the question, 'Why don't you move or expand your business to the Most Intelligent Community in the world?'"
