Spotlight set on Winnipeg's high-rising downtown While The Megill-Stephenson Company Ltd. might not be a household name in Winnipeg, the company's impact is seen and felt throughout the city—and beyond. It has interests in automotive retail, sports and entertainment, real estate, healthcare, financial services and a variety of other public and private investments. Its subsidiaries include Birchwood Automotive Group, True North Sports + Entertainment, Careica Health and Longboat Development Corporation. "Winnipeg has given us all of the opportunities that the company has been able to take advantage of," said Brad Peacock, President and Chief Investment Officer of The Megill-Stephenson Company. "The character of the people in this community, the work ethic, the resiliency of people in Winnipeg has allowed businesses to be established here and continue to grow." Development, both commercial and residential, had long been focused on up-and-coming neighbourhoods in Winnipeg's south end. Only in recent years has Winnipeg's Downtown had the spotlight and been revitalized thanks to commitments from the local business community. The results have been well received by residents and visitors alike. "Our downtown had been underinvested in for decades," said Peacock. "We had the opportunity to partner with some other organizations and spearhead a couple of downtown projects, including the then-MTS Centre in 2004 and, in 2015, Centrepoint," a five-storey building with corporate offices, a hotel and condominiums along Winnipeg's iconic Portage Avenue. More recently, The Megill-Stephenson Company was involved in the development of True North Square, a mixed office, residential, hotel and retail property. Consisting of four towers, True North Square will span more than over one million square feet in the heart of downtown Winnipeg.
