REVEAL DEFINE ASSIGN IMPLEMENT DE&I IDENTIFY When George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May 2020 and the news spread, it became a catalyst for a larger conversation at Johnston Group. The family-owned and Winnipeg-based company that specializes in employee benefits solutions for businesses took a hard look at Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). "A lot of it was organic and came from our staff. One thing we recognized and I hope all companies recognize this— we have a lot of work to do. We weren't diverse as we should be, especially at our senior management level. We didn't have a strategy in place and didn't have a mechanism for employees dealing with racism or intolerance to be able to take action upon it. We knew we needed to do something," said Dave Angus, President of Johnston Group. The company hired Jaime Chinchilla, a DE&I consultant and expert, who pulled together recommendations for HR practices. At the same time, a committee was created within the company.
