Celebrating 150 years engaging communities The Free Press The Free Press, one of the city's longest-running news leaders, celebrates its 150th year of award-winning journalism and storytelling throughout Manitoba. From the beginning, The Free Press committed to being an outlet where its quality reporting would earn the respect of its readers and ultimately make it a Winnipeg institution. "Back then, Winnipeg was just a couple of shacks and some muddy streets," said Bob Cox, The Free Press Publisher. "We've been growing with the community since that time and helping to keep everyone informed about events around the world and connecting people to their communities." Over the years The Free Press has spearheaded several initiatives to get the public engaged with the newspaper. "You have to keep in touch with the people who use the newspaper—whether it is readers or advertisers—and what we've really been trying to do is reach out to parts of the community that we haven't reached in the past," said Cox. The Free Press's Community Bridge Project "reaches out to underserved communities that haven't been engaged with news before," said Cox, outlining newly formed relationships with Indigenous and lower-income communities. "The very definition of a newspaper is a community in conversation with itself and we want to keep that conversation going." The Free Press is part of Facebook, Google and Apple's respective news networks that gives Winnipeg's stories and people a spotlight on the global stage. "This partnership spreads our content further than we can do ourselves," said Cox. "We are thrilled to be part of their news ecosystem so we can reach broader audiences. It gives a lot more exposure to what is going on in Winnipeg." With expanded digital distribution, the world gets a better glimpse at what Winnipeggers have known all along and what The Free Press has been delivering to Manitobans for generations.
