NEW RESTAURANT RUNDOWN In spite of everything, Winnipeg's culinary scene has seen its fair share of notable spots open in the past two years—much to the delight of locals and visitors alike. Below we highlight a number of new dining rooms along with casual counters we recommend. You can always head to pegcitygrub.com to find a full serving of Winnipeg's culinary scene. Counters/casual service Beshiestakoyumms 1437 Arlington Street instagram.com/beshiestakoyumms The name is a mouthful, as are the vast amounts of takoyaki at this takeout business that opened in spring 2022. Beshie is by a Winnipeg-Filipino entrepreneur who developed a deft hand at creating Japanese street food— namely takoyaki and okonomiyaki—after multiple trips and stints in Japan. Cake-ology 85 Arthur Street • cakeology.ca Cake-ology's chef and co-owner, Austin Granados' pastry pedigree includes some of the world's best, such as working under Dominique Ansel in NYC, the Michelin- starred Vea in Hong Kong and a stage at Noma. Granados still does cakes at Cake-ology (his custom ones are showstoppers), but the main draw is the glorious pastry counter, which features the flakiest, buttery and expertly crafted creations like his signature kouign-amann. Don't sleep on the burnt Basque cheesecake either. CrusTop Pizza 20-1700 Corydon Avenue • crustoppizza.com This adorable new hidden gem, tucked away in a Corydon Ave. strip mall, serves up rectangular pizzas that are perfect for two in an array of styles on a delightful dough. Its owner, Wendy Xu, learned the craft while on assignment in her home city of Beijing, China, where she worked as a features editor. Signature pies feature bases like pumpkin puree, kimchi sauce, and mashed Yukon potato, plus there's a tiramisu-zza for dessert. D&M Caribbean Flava 885 Molson Street • dmcaribbeanflava.com This Jamaican joint opened in June 2022, with all the staples, including curried goat, a number of jerk dishes and pepper shrimp, instantly becoming a "worth the drive" spot for the city's Caribbean community. If you want to go big, they offer family dinners that include rice, salad, festival and plantain, along with your choice of jerk chicken, fried chicken or curried goat with fried chicken. They also do breakfast starting at 7 a.m., with a menu that includes ackee and salt fish with fried dumpling and plantain. Hoagie Boyz 513 Osborne Street • hoagieboyz.com If the one missing piece in South Osborne's excellent culinary puzzle was stoner-inspired subs, the neighbourhood is now complete. Hoagie Boyz is by the super-popular ghost kitchen Kosmo's Space Cowboy Food Cantina. Here, in their own space, the boys never cut corners when it comes to celebrating Italian subs loaded with "shredduce" and house-made "sub sauce" (the roast turkey for instance is a four-day process), ensuring you'll want to "slam a hoagie to the dome" from this spot that's "famously open" from just 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Shorty's Pizza 53 Maryland Street • shortyspizza.ca Shorty's took the Wolseley/West End area by storm with its huge New York-style pies that are perfect for folding. The room is unfussy, as is the super chill and friendly staff, but you can tell that much care has gone into these airy, crusty pies—like the bacon and mushroom, which comes with roasted kale and spicy honey and is now one of our favourite pizzas in the city. The kale caesar salad is a must (they put Hickory Sticks in it), plus local breweries Kilter and Lake of the Woods Brew Co brew their signature lager (LOTW) and pilsner (Kilter). T-Town Style Pizza 308 Fort Street • ttownstylepizza.com Northern pizza has come to the capital. Thompson, Manitoba's popular style pizza—thick, cheese laden, with a sweet-spicy sauce—can now be found in downtown Winnipeg on Main Street courtesy of two Métis brothers from the town. They liken it to a Chicago-style pie (the crust is that robust), while we'd say the cheese level is Argentinian in its volume. Come hungry, these pies are heavy. Friends Donair and Shawarma 884 Notre Dame Avenue friendsdonairandshawarma.business.site Yet another new spot in the West End. Friends' owner (who is seriously the friendliest guy) used to be at Best Pizza and Donair, a hidden gem in Fort Garry that always comes up in best shawarma conversations. The meats at Friends are cut from the spit to order, there are several plates if you are looking to go gluten-free (minus the pita chips) and there's a donair poutine with house-cut fries which absolutely slays. It's already much loved in the area. 11 tourismwinnipeg.com 2023 WINNIPEG VISITOR'S GUIDE NEW RESTAURANT RUNDOWN
