INDIGENOUS
EXPERIENCES
Winnipeg is located on Treaty 1 territory, the
traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree,
Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene Peoples and on the
homeland of the Métis Nation. The following
experiences and attractions are either run by
Indigenous peoples or have been created in
consultation.
Feast Café Bistro
feastcafebistro.com
Feast is one of only a couple Indigenous owned and
operated restaurants in Canada that is rooted in First
Nations cuisine. Its owner Christa Bruneau-Guenther is
a proud member of the Peguis First Nation and a cast
member of Food Network Canada's Wall of Chefs. At
Feast, her hiring mandate involves providing meaningful
employment to those who have had previous barriers,
while signature items include "Tipi" tacos, bannock pizzas,
bison chili and walleye sliders.
Indigenous Peoples Garden
at the Gardens at The Leaf
assiniboinepark.ca/leaf/about-the-leaf/explore-gardens
Elders and community members came together to work
with two local Indigenous designers to create this space
at Winnipeg's newest high-profile attraction. The layout
of the garden offers communal spaces for performance,
ceremony and contemplation, with features celebrating
fire and water, including a massive seating circle around
a fire pit and a pond surrounded by carved stools.
Indigenous youth helped in the garden's construction—
from planting trees to building the boardwalk—while the
plant species throughout its expansive grounds include
local prairie grasses and perennials.
Lower Fort Garry National
Historic Site

Learn the history of local Indigenous communities, touch
the leather goods and furs that would have been traded
at the Hudson's Bay Company post and stand on the land
where Treaty No. 1 was signed. A new area features two
wigwams and one 12-foot, bison hide tipi that Indigenous
artists built.
