New Treaty Knowledge Centre Opened in December 2022, the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM) opened its Agowiidiwinan Centre at The Forks, Manitoba's number one attraction, featuring more than 6,000 years of history. The new centre gives visitors the opportunity to learn about treaties through a short tour using visual and interactive tools. It is a publicly accessible environment that showcases oral history, archival history, and a contemporary understanding of Treaties, providing tools to assist in Canada's reconciliation journey. The TRCM worked with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to finalize this space that serves as a tool for learning, acquiring resources and for people to gather to share stories and knowledge with the intent to continue to expand its collection of materials. Three new hotels recently opened or in the works to open in 2023 Wyndham Garden Winnipeg Airport is owned by Long Plain First Nation, which is located on Treaty One Territory on Long Plain Madison Reserve, the city's first urban reserve. Sparrow Hotels manages the property, which also owns popular boutique hotels, including Inn at the Forks and Mere Hotel. The hotel is part of the Wyndham Garden group; it is the first Indigenous-owned hotel under that brand. Indigenous culture is weaved into the hotel throughout, from the food to art work to design and more. Downtown, construction is underway on a new Hampton Inn by Hilton Winnipeg Downtown Hotel, opening in July 2023. Sandman Signature, an elevated Sandman hotel experience, will be on same piece of land as Sandman Hotel & Suites Winnipeg and the two will be connected, opening in October 2023. Outdoor Attractions Upgrades Opening in winter 2023, Buffalo Crossing is a brand-new multi- purpose and 10-acre site development. The 18,000 sq. ft., two-storey building will allow FortWhyte Alive to expand its programming. It will be anchored by a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge across Muir Lake that will allow for connection to FWA's trail system. The new building will include visitor reception, a coffee shop and retail space, along with space for youth programming. Buffalo Crossing will be the first commercial building in Manitoba certified to Passive House standard, the most rigorous voluntary energy-based standard in the design/ construction industry today. Oak Hammock Marsh, one of North America's premier birding destinations, is renovating its interpretive centre to include a reconfigured space that offers a mixture of refreshed and new exhibits, set to be complete in late 2023. The next phase would see a redecorated café and new meeting room in 2024.
