ICONIC BUILDS
At the turn-of-the-last century Winnipeg had the nickname
"Chicago of the North" because of its modern skyscrapers
created in the Chicago School style of architecture. One
popular example of these "terra cotta skyscrapers" is the
Union Bank Building, which was the first skyscraper built in
Canada when it was completed in 1904, and the second-tallest
building in the British Empire at the time.
Winnipeg's Union Station was designed by the same
architects responsible for Grand Central Station in New
York City, while the massive sculptures found throughout
the Manitoba Legislative Building were done by the Piccirilli
brothers, who also carved the Statue of Abraham Lincoln
(Lincoln Memorial) in Washington.
