We were the first city in North America to use a three-digit
central emergency number thanks to the efforts of Mayor
Stephen Juba, who also had the number changed from 9-9-9
to 9-1-1, which is now used across North America.
Winnipeg has a fascinating garment industry history that
continues to this day. During the 1930s, our garment industry
was one of the remaining successful industries in the city with
more than 200 firms in operation as the industry continued
to grow in spite of the Great Depression. Today, we have
several large successful clothing companies that continue to
clothe fashion lovers across the globe, including Silver Jeans,
Canada Goose, Peerless Garments and Mondetta.
