Yujiro is by award-winning chef Ed Lam, who also runs Saburo Kitchen in Hargrave Street Market and both spots serve rave-worthy sushi, ramen and izakaya-style dishes. Yujiro was recently singled out by former Globe & Mail food critic and Canada's 100 Best judge Alexandra Gill as having, "an exquisite eight-course omakase." deer + almond has made the Canada's 100 list several times in the past for its colourful dishes and chill (and occasionally saucy!) vibe that always draw in celebrities when they are in town filming or performing. Mandel Hitzer, deer + almond's chef-owner, himself is a bit of a Canadian food celebrity, appearing on the Food Network's Wall of Chefs as a regular judge alongside Winnipeg's Christa Bruneau-Guenther, whose Feast Cafe Bistro remains one of the nation's top Indigenous restaurants. As to Clementine, while we always knew it was Canada's best brunch spot, the recent 100 confirmed it. The restaurant—helmed by chef-co-owner Chris Gama, co- owner Raya Conrad and chef du cuisine Paul Eccles—has received much love and acclaim since opening in spring 2016, with lineups for brunch a regular occurrence. In a 2018 rave review, Globe & Mail food critic Dan Clapson, opined, "Can a brunch restaurant also be considered one of the country's best restaurants?" We now have that answer. Landing at number five on Air Canada/EnRoute's current Canada's Best New Restaurants list is Petit Socco, an intimate two-person operation by chef Adam Donnelly and Courtney Molaro. This tiny restaurant seats just 10, presenting a new four-course menu every week where reservations–weeks in advance–are now even more of a must. Petit Socco was joined by Saint-Boniface's Bar Accanto on the Best New Restaurants longlist, which sees this charming wine bar following in the footsteps of its flagship restaurant Nola, which made the list in 2022. Both Nola and Bar Accanto are part of The Burnley Place Hospitality Group and connected via a hallway. At Nola, the dishes come courtesy of Top Chef Canada alum Emily Butcher, who also finished third at the Canadian Culinary Championships in 2020. In 2022, the Globe & Mail called Nola the best new culinary concept on the Prairies, with Winnipeg's Hoagie Boyz and Low Life Barrel House also coming in at number nine and ten respectively. Bar Accanto features a menu by Nola alum Colin Naylor, which shines just as bright with elegant plates and a selection of carefully curated natural wines. Chef Scott Bagshaw too is a master of the wine bar. With his Italian joint Passero being a local favourite, while his flagship small plates restaurant Enoteca closed in September, Bagshaw has reopened it as Né de Loup, with reservations once again a must. deer + almond, photo by William Au 13 tourismwinnipeg.com WINNIPEG'S ACCLAIMED CULINARY SCENE
