Barometer Report Highlights Canada's economy in the first few quarters of 2013 saw positive economic changes as housing markets strengthened, and consumer and business confidence also picked up. Winnipeg's economy continued to be characterized as stable with moderate growth, and is forecasted to perform the same in 2014. Positive forecasts from The Conference Board of Canada and PFK Consulting Inc. continue to show a stable travel market for Winnipeg thanks to Manitoba's strong growing economy, which will support the local tourism sector to expand at a stable rate. New hotels, retail, and tourism product development in 2013 helped lay out a solid foundation for Winnipeg's tourism industry. The Conference Board of Canada recently stated Winnipeg is anticipated to rank among the highest in increased overnight visits in 2014 across all Canadian cities. The Conference Board of Canada also forecasts strong growth in pleasure travel with the opening of new developments and attractions, including the Journey to Churchill exhibit and upgrades to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, Thermëa spa, Upper Fort Garry Park and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Other developments beyond 2014, such as the expansion of the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, improvements to existing hotels, a $6.5 million refresh at Union Station, and the Winnipeg Airport's increased flight capacity within Canada and arrivals from international markets will continue to raise Winnipeg's profile as a travel destination.
