The Winnipeg Barometer Report | Volume 6, 2014 3 Barometer Report Highlights Canada's economy is seeing positive economic changes. Business and consumer confidence keeps picking up, plus it is expected to remain stable with moderate growth over the medium term. Winnipeg's economy continues to perform at a moderate pace and relatively well compared to the national average, with 2015 forecasted to be a stronger year. The Conference Board of Canada forecasts positive growth in Canada's travel market for 2014 and 2015. Winnipeg's travel market is forecasted to have strong positive growth as Manitoba's healthy economy continues to support the local tourism sector to expand at a stable rate. New hotels, retail, and tourism product development in 2013 helped lay out a solid foundation for Winnipeg's tourism industry moving forward. The Conference Board of Canada recently stated Winnipeg is anticipated to rank among the highest in increased overnight visits in 2014 and 2015 across all Canadian cities. The meetings and conventions market is also seeing an increase in 2014 with more citywides booked compared to 2013. The Conference Board of Canada forecasts the strongest growth in pleasure travel in 2014 and 2015 thanks to the opening of new developments and attractions, including the Journey to Churchill exhibit and upgrades to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, Thermëa spa, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Other developments beyond 2014, such as the expansion of the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, improvements to existing hotels and construction of new ones, a $6.5 million refresh at Union Station, the creation of Upper Fort Garry, and the Winnipeg Airport's increased flight capacity within Canada and arrivals from international markets will increase Winnipeg's profile as a travel destination.
