NEW ATTRACTIONS
SUPPORT ONGOING
TOURISM GROWTH
Tourism market development in Winnipeg is expected to bring
more visitors to Winnipeg in the coming years as Winnipeg raises its
national and international profile.
The
Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR)
opened in September 2014 and is expected to draw more than
250,000 visitors per year, providing a significant boost to the local
tourism sector.
A
$210-million expansion of the RBC Convention Centre
Winnipeg will make it the fourth-largest convention centre in Canada,
strengthening the city's ability to compete for large trade shows and
conventions. It will be completed in 2016 and offer a total of 264,000
square feet.
New regional attractions include
Canada's second-largest
IKEA store, Journey to Churchill polar bear exhibit at the
Assiniboine Park Zoo and Thermëa spa.
More than 10 new hotels are either now open or are slated for
construction over the next two years. By early 2016, Winnipeg will
have 8,000 rooms.
Tourism-related spending in Winnipeg from overnight visits is
projected to grow by four per cent in 2015. As
visitors to Winnipeg grow in the years ahead, so too will spending,
which is expected to increase 6.6 per cent in 2015.
