I know all the ins and outs of turning up the heat here in the Peg City during our sultry summers (oh so hot) when love is always in the air. ● DAY 1 First off, let's get you two a room, shall we? May I recommend, if you are into a little bit of that old-world grandeur, the always- classy Fort Garry Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre? When you approach this stunning façade you'll see how its polished brass rails invite you in through the lobby for drinks in the elegant Palm Lounge, where evenings almost always feature someone tickling the ivories on the grand piano. But save that lounge for later, because after you two check- in you should hit the streets of Winnipeg where romance permeates like music from the Exchange District's outdoor Cube stage. A nice little spot to do some handholding in the summer is on the patio at Peasant Cookery, where you can savour French-inspired fare while listening to any number of local or international acts that play on the Cubes' futuristic stage. Before you stop in, grab a coffee from Parlour Coffee on Main Street because nothing says lovin' like frothy milk perched atop a strong shot of espresso. Then take your special someone to the Exchange District's many cool shops and galleries. If you want to buy their love, how about some one-of-a-kind house-made jewellery from Hilary Druxman? For an afternoon, why don't you two lovebirds head down to The Forks, just a short walk from your hotel? Come summer, The Forks flaunts tree-lined walking trails that expose all the bends in the shoreline, or you can hop on a riverboat that will ride the currents of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, all while you embrace and observe our sexy new skyline. As night falls, head out to one of Winnipeg's celebrated tapas restaurants because nothing entices like sharing bites, you feel me? In Osborne Village you can savour Spanish flavours from chef Adam Donnelly at Segovia – Winnipeg's most acclaimed restaurant. If you get there early be sure to get a seat on the charming little patio where you can sip some cava and feed one another delectable bites. They don't take reservations, but you can put your name down at the door and go for pre-dinner cocktails at the adults-only Toad Whiskey Bar (you have to be 25+ to enter), just a couple doors down on Osborne's main drag. Post-dinner, take a romantic stroll down the city's famed Assiniboine Riverwalk, where the babbling waters sound like sweet nothings in your ear. You'll also hear birds sing overhead as if to say, "Get a little closer." Holding hands isn't mandatory, but I bet you do, you smitten little lovers you. ● DAY 2 If the two of you are into nouveau chic boutique hotels, then book yourself in at the Mere Hotel, located right on Waterfront Drive, Winnipeg's newest, trendiest part of downtown. Grab a quick breakfast at the adjacent Cibo Waterfront Café (they make a luscious, flaky croissant) and start your day exploring Winnipeg looking sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two. That's right! What could be more romantic than seeing the city riding on a tandem bike from Bee-2-Gether Bike Rentals. It's conveniently located at The Forks, just a five-minute walk from the Mere.
