Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site
Towering safely above the high-water mark of
Manitoba's infamous Red River sits Lower Fort Garry
National Historic Site, a place of rough-hewn stone
walls and sturdy historic buildings at the eastern edge
of the vast Canadian prairies. Evoke the spirit of the past
175 years with the help of skilled costumed interpreters.
This is the place where a young Western Canada began
to take shape. Explore this place of firsts. Here, the first
numbered treaty was made between the Saulteaux,
Swampy Cree and the Crown. It is also the site of the
first training centre for the North-West Mounted Police,
Manitoba's first prison and insane asylum, and the first
commercial farm in Western Canada.
Group tour programs are flexible and able to
accommodate special interests and busy schedules.
Book a private guided tour or explore on your own.
There are "Behind-the-Scenes" tours and a variety of
interactive programs for pre-booked groups of all sizes
and ages.
The fort offers free motorcoach parking and
complimentary admission for a tour escort and driver, as
well as a restaurant, gift shop, year-round programming,
facility rentals and English and French language services.
