Manitoba Museum: Leif Norman Assiniboine Park & Zoo 40 2016 SPRING/SUMMER EVENTS & ITINERARIES GUIDE Winnipeg Family Fun SUPERPARENTS TO THE RESCUE! With superhero movies all the rage nowadays, it's a common sight to see your kids idolizing all these high-flying, laser-beam shooting, little-old-lady-saving superstars. How can you compete with such flashy fashion choices? Fortunately you can be the Superdad or Supermom for your kids by following this awesome itinerary that is jam-packed full of nifty things to do. And you don't even have to wear a cape! TO THE OUTDOORS, AND BEYOND: If it's a boat life for you, may we suggest fishing, canoeing or kayaking at FortWhyte Alive, Winnipeg's urban nature reserve? It is studded with more wetlands, wildlife and family- friendly activities than you can toss a spear at, which you can learn how to do on FortWhyte's A Prairie Legacy: The Bison and its People tour. (Don't worry, your kids will not actually be throwing spears at bison, but you can get close enough to them to hear them grunt and munch on grass). Water also features (pun intended) at Assiniboine Park in the summer where splash pads are part of the kid-centric Nature Playground. This year-round play zone is especially enticing in the heat with its snaky slides, water and sand feature, children's garden — which contains massive whimsical creatures made from vegetation — willow tree tunnels, net bridges, and modern climbing, running and jumping apparatuses. There's The Park Café inside the Qualico Family Centre for dining. Plus, the Assiniboine Park Zoo features more than 200 animals along with the incredible Journey to Churchill exhibit — the world's most comprehensive northern species exhibit — where your family will be absolutely awestruck at the sight of nine polar bears swimming and playing (which you can watch from below through a clear acrylic tunnel). You can grab a snack at Tundra Grill where the large glass windows let the kids stare at polar bears as they eat — and the bears get to stare back! And the nearby Polar Playground is filled with interactive games and structures that let the young ones run wild and play in Arctic- themed activities. Just outside of Winnipeg is A Maze in Corn, an adventure park that includes a gigantic corn maze in late summer (it's over 10 feet high!), ziplining (which opens in June), a petting zoo, and pony and hayrides. And if you're in the mood for getting soaked, you can also take your kids to Fun Mountain Waterslide Park where water slides, tunnels, and multiple pools are an ideal place to beat the summer heat. And right next door is Tinkertown, an outdoor amusement park for the wee ones that's filled with wild rides and games for them to enjoy. Active families that love trying out different sports and activities will have more than enough options at Adrenaline Adventures, where they can try climbing on the massive outdoor rope course, go ziplining, or even strap in for some extreme fun with cable wakeboarding. Take it to the races at Grand Prix Amusements whose Grand Prix (ages 10+) or Formula Fun (14+) tracks are guaranteed to start your family's engines. Even the little ones can get in on the action on bumper boats and bumper cars. They also have pirate- themed mini golf, batting cages, and a host of water weaponry that is guaranteed to have you soak up some good times. The Forks has loads of fun places to shop and eat for families, but it doesn't skimp on the children's activities either. Teens will flip when they see the truly awesome The Plaza at The Forks, where skaters and BMXers try out their best moves. Younger kids can really let loose and enjoy the imaginative and creative Variety Heritage Adventure Playground, as they splash around in the water park, or climb around on play structures that present the history of The Forks. Getting tired out from that could mean an excellent opportunity for stopping
