2017 Destination Marketing Plan & Partnership Opportunities | Tourism Winnipeg 15 As of July 31, 2016 Tourism Winnipeg and its stakeholders responded to 12 RFPs and bids, which have resulted in six awarded sports and special events to date and are awaiting decisions on an additional six events. This compares to 2015 in which Tourism Winnipeg won seven of the eight RFPs and bids that were submitted. SPORTS AND SPECIAL EVENTS MARKETING Tourism Winnipeg will continue to produce Winnipeg sell sheets featuring the latest developments and value propositions of Winnipeg as a major sports and special events destination. Tourism Winnipeg will use its attendance-building materials and video testimonials, as well as access to information and reports through Simpleview, to promote Winnipeg as a viable destination. Other promotional materials, such as signage, digital content, and a sport venue directory, will be created to support the sales and sponsorship activities. Trends Sports and Special Events Trends › Cities across Canada are increasingly recognizing the value of sport tourism, with interest in sport hosting and sport tourism continuing to grow. Many cities are forming sport tourism councils with interested stakeholders to develop a proactive and systematic approach to identifying and securing new sport events to be held in their cities › Communities with sport tourism experience are creating their own sport tournaments/events, designed to fill gaps in a calendar or capitalize on a specific opportunity › In 2016, according to the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance girls'/women's, young children, parasports, ultimate, extreme sports, marathons, cycling and master level events are growing in popularity › Some large-scale sporting events in Canada have seen bid procedures change in the past years. One of these observed changes is that mandatory rights fees (sometimes called bid fees) are increasing, or in other cases, new rights fees are being introduced where no previous fee existed. These changes are resulting in elevated operational costs for host cities that are attempting to bring major events to their jurisdiction › Canada maintained second place in the 2015 Global Sports Nation Index announced by Sportcal (UK), as part of its Global Sports Impact Project. Canada is a significant mover due primarily to a strong period of landing world championships in curling, swimming and hockey, as well as the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games and FIFA Women's World Cup.
