The Winnipeg Barometer Report | Volume 8, 2016 5 In addition to an increase in U.S. travel, overseas visits to Canada will see continued growth in 2016 and 2017 of 8.7% and 6.4% respectively from all world markets. Visitation from these markets is supported by an increase in direct air capacity, a weaker dollar than the U.S. and thus an even more favourable exchange rate, high consumer confidence and for Asia specifically, new visa initiatives that will aid in a faster process for travellers. Thus far in 2016 visitation from Asia is expected to post an additional 14.7% after an 8.1% growth in 2015. Overall, tourism spending in 2016 is expected to increase 6.1%, reflecting the increase in visitation by the international travel market and the expected travel prices. For 2017, tourism spending will gain an additional increase of 6.0%. The pace of spending growth is expected to rise over the medium term albeit modest for 2016 at 1.7%, stabilizing at 2.0%-2.3% over the medium term. The Conference Board generally predicts overall 2017 overnight visitation to be on pace with 2016 with overnight visits increasing 3.0%. These overnight visits were comprised of a 2.7% increase in domestic travel; U.S. travel, forecasted to gain 3.9%; and overseas travel, which will continue to see the strongest growth of 6.4%.
