5 LEGENDS TALES • Volume 6, 2017 Canada 150 The 50th anniversary of the 2017 Canada Summer Games features 16 sports, over 250 events and a dazzling cultural festival. Over 4,000 athletes and coaches and more than 20,000 visitors are expected (July 28-August 13). The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is hosting several official Canada 150 exhibits. 1867: Confederation and Rebellion takes visitors through a lesser-known story about Canada's birth (to April 30). Our Canada, My Story: A New Exhibition for Canada 150 highlights uplifting stories of contemporary Canadians working to overcome human rights challenges (to November 30). Points of View: A National Human Rights Photography Exhibition uses crowd-sourced images from across the country reflecting themes in four categories (opens July 1). The Manitoba Museum's Legacies of Confederation: A New Look at Manitoba History exhibit examines the impact of confederation on the people and land that would become Manitoba, the fifth province to join Canada. View the stunning Maplewish Mosaic at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), which brings together wood pieces painted by 13 different artists and collectives to form a diverse Canada 150 mosaic (to October 1). ART EXPRESS'D/ART EXPRIMÉ takes three 20-foot shipping containers and turns them into mobile art studios, which will visit every province and territory before returning to Winnipeg. Three contemporary artists travelling one of the three routes will lead collaborative art-making projects, and a fourth studio will be stationed at The Forks (begins June 7). The Winnipeg Singers present Happy Birthday Canada! Canadian Landscapes and will perform a range of Canadian choral music with a guest choir from Gretna (April 30). Spur Festival is a national festival of politics, art and ideas. In 2017 it tackles the topic of nation-building through events covering geopolitics, the environment, energy, food, health, culture, economics, security and education (May 4-8). Manitoba Chamber Orchestra presents Nanabush and the Drum, a hilarious yet touching theatrical work, which dramatizes the foundation of the Métis people (June 7, 8). It doesn't get more Canadian than the RCMP Musical Ride at Assiniboia Downs (June 10, 11). The Transcona Short Film Festival's theme is "celebrating Canada through the eye of Transcona." The shortlisted two-minute films screened showcase the filmmakers' Transcona (a Winnipeg neighbourhood) history and stories (June 16).
