Winnipeg's Exchange District is home to North America's finest collection of turn-of-the-20th century buildings along with some of the hippest happenings in Canada. If you are visiting in summer, chances are free concerts will be a con- stant in the award-winning Cube stage at Old Market Square. Along its heritage- designated streets you'll find fabulous restaurants and hip coffee shops, galler- ies featuring works from local and inter- national artists, along with trendy locally owned shops and boutiques. as well as hundreds of artifacts, ceram- ics and textiles. Along with being a com- munity hub for exhibitions and programs, research and learning, studio practice and art-making, the Inuit Art Centre will also be an off-site venue, featuring 40,000 square feet of event space located across four distinct levels. Assiniboine Park Zoo is where you'll find the multi-award winning Journey to Churchill, the most comprehensive Arctic species exhibit of its kind in the world. Jour- ney to Churchill contains nine polar bears (who tend to steal the show as audiences watch them swim and wrestle overhead in the Sea Ice Passage), wolves (who starred in The Grey with Liam Neeson), Arctic fox, snowy owls, muskox and a host of other in- credible animals. It also contains the Leather- dale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, where important research is being conducted on the effects of climate change on northern species. The Exchange is also the home of the Manitoba Museum, an institution re- nowned for its combined human and nat- ural heritage themes. The nine permanent galleries in this award-winning centre will enthral kids and adults alike, whether you are catching a planetarium show, or going through the Hudson's Bay Company Mu- seum Collection – one of Canada's most important historical exhibits. Architecturally striking and centrally located in the heart of downtown, the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) houses an internationally acclaimed collection of nearly 24,000 works.
