Page 45 APPENDIX B Appendix B: Manitoba Marathon Medical System Overview Through our 38 years of experience, the Manitoba Marathon has established extensive medical and communications system fully integrated with city of Winnipeg Fire paramedic and emergency system. Led by our Medical Leadership Committee, the entire race uses a hierarchical approach to medical support. Each year between 175 and 200 volunteers are utilized in our medical support team divided into three categories: Course Type of support Communication Level 1 Stationary medical personnel at every hospitality station along course (every 2 miles on the first half, every mile on second half) Amateur radio medical Net based in COMM Centre Level 2 Mobile medical units on bicycle equipped with O 2 and Defibrillator Fleetnet Mobile radio based in COMM Center Level 3 Physician and nurses in vehicles Amateur radio medical Net based in COMM Center Level 4 Dedicated ambulance with ACLS paramedic assigned to each half of the course. Unit moves with pack of runners for optimal response time City 911 System via direct line between Manitoba Marathon COMM center and 911 Dispatch Level 5 Transport to Hospital City 911 System Finish Line Type of support Communication Level 1 Basic medical observation, volunteer "huggers" Level 2 First responder Local area Mobile Radio with headsets. Communicate with ACLS Paramedic Level 3 ACLS Paramedic Manitoba Marathon COMM center and 911 Dispatch (City System ) Level 4 Transport to Hospital City 911 System Recovery Area Care Center (approximately 200 meters from finish line) Type of support Communication Level 1 Basic First aid station (i.e. Band-Aids, Blister care, ice) Local Area Mobile radio to Care Center Level 2 Athletic Therapy, Physiotherapy, Massage, Chiropractic and Podiatry Amateur radio medical Net based in COMM Center Level 3 Advanced medical Support: Physicians, Nurses, ACLS capability Amateur radio medical Net based in COMM Center Level 4 Dedicated ambulance on standby for transport to Hospital City 911 System Appendix B
