O P E R A T I O N A L P L A N • 4 1 The 2023 World Police and Fire Games has an obligation to be environmentally responsible and minimize waste. The Host Organization will have a Sustainability Strategy. This will include: WASTE REDUCTION This will be accomplished through the reduction and recycling of materials used in venues and associated facilities (both on-site and through recycling programs). EFFICIENT TR ANSPORTATION Winnipeg has the advantage of being a midsized city with relatively short commute times. The city is teeming with efficient automobile, public transit and bicycle routes. Downtown facilities are all within reasonable walking distances. Logistics planning will incorporate these advantages. MINIMIZATION OF NONRENEWABLE ENERGY CONSUMPTION Manitoba is blessed with renewable hydropower as the source of most of its energy needs. All electricity needed for the games will come from renewable resources. Other energy requirements will incorporate efforts to minimize carbon emissions. ADDITIONAL NOTEWORTHY CONSIDER ATIONS: » Manitoba has over 100,000 lakes, so it's perhaps not surprising the majority of electricity produced by Manitoba Hydro (a Crown corporation) comes from the province's vast water resources—a renewable, clean source of energy. Most of the remaining electricity production in the province comes from wind power. Manitobans enjoy electricity production that is 97 per cent renewable and electricity rates that are amongst the lowest in North America. » Manitoba has been recognized as a leading jurisdiction in addressing climate change. » Manitoba Hydro's award-winning headquarters in downtown Winnipeg has been recognized as one of the most energy-efficient office towers in North America. It was the first office tower in Canada to receive the prestigious LEED Platinum rating. » With nearly 10,000 acres of parks, including one of the largest urban forests in North America, Winnipeg has more green space per capita than almost every other city. » Winnipeg has extremely low pollution levels. » Winnipeg is home to New Flyer Industries, a world leader in the production of low-emission hybrid buses. » The 2023 World Police and Fire Games provide an opportunity to promote the games as one of the most environmentally friendly multi-sport games anywhere. The people of Manitoba readily support these sustainability initiatives. Historically, the people of Winnipeg have come from around the world and, in preserving their heritage, have created a dynamic and diverse cultural mosaic. As a result, Winnipeg is also one of the most culturally diverse cities in Canada. Winnipeg is a culturally diverse city with more than 100 languages represented including French, Tagalog (Pilipino, Filipino), Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka), German, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Italian, Russian and Korean to name but a few. Winnipeg is home to the largest French Canadian community west of Quebec. Volunteer and staff recruitment will consider the need for bilingual services, as an asset or requirement depending on duties. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUS TAINAB ILIT Y L ANGUAGE SERVICES
