Korean kawaii interior plays host to excellent barbecue and waffle dishes (not all on the same plate, of course). Joining this is Harth Mozza and Wine Bar (980 St. Anne's Road), an old-school Italian joint where the pastas are all handmade, the meats and vegetable dishes are roasted in a wood-fired oven, the wine list is mint, and the interior is chic. It's only been open since summer 2017 and has already become a favourite for many Winnipeggers who work in the restaurant biz (which is a glowing endorsement). If you are feeling particularly hip and want to hit up some small plates, then Langside Grocery (164 Langside Street) is the spot for you. Situated in the hipstery West Broadway neighbourhood, this converted storefront (which was also the fake TV café for the comedy series Sunnyside) serves up quality cocktails, wine, beer and bites in a handsome room that harkens back to the 1920s. Also in the small plates category is Bouchée Boucher (101-300 Tache Avenue), a new feather in St. Boniface's farm-to-table hat where the cuts are created right inside their adjourning butcher shop. There's also a new tapas bar to be found in the Exchange District called Cordova (93 Albert Street), whose simple Spanish and Southwest France-inspired dishes are dictated by two young owners who hail from France and Belgium. Considering Winnipeg really only has one other traditional tapas bar, that being Segovia (484 Stradbrook Avenue) — Winnipeg's perennial pick on all the "Canada's best restaurant" lists — it already stands in good company. Branching (and Brunching) Out Speaking of Segovia, the core group from that restaurant struck brunch gold with their own Exchange District restaurant called Clementine (123 Princess Street). In 2017 enRoute magazine included it on their long list of best new restaurants in Canada — the only Winnipeg room to break the top 10 was chef Scott Bagshaw's Enoteca in 2015 (1670 Corydon Avenue; more on him to come) — while local foodies have ensured it has become the most-popular brunch/lunch spot in the city. In 2016, the aforementioned Bagshaw also made the enRoute long list with his third restaurant Máqùe (909 Dorchester Avenue) — an Asian-influenced small plates restaurant where the plating is picture perfect, while joining his mini-restaurant empire is Passero, a small Italian osteria located in The Common (the aforementioned food hall in The Forks Market). Right next-door is The Red Ember, Winnipeg's perpetually busiest food truck whose brick and mortar market location features a super sexy Izzo Forno that will surely catch your eye and cause queues with their almost legendary crispy- yet-chewy crusts. And please note: this itinerary pairs well with our official culinary website, pegcitygrub.com, where you'll find more stories on the chefs, restaurants, breweries, bars and bakeries that make Winnipeg such an enticing culinary destination.
