10 2018 TRAVEL TRADE PLANNER WINNIPEG Sustainable Tourism While the United Nations declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, here in Winnipeg we want to make that commitment far into the future. Make a difference by choosing a sustainable, green and authentic tourism experience here in Winnipeg! The Forks, Winnipeg's most-visited tourist attraction, marks an area saturated in Indigenous history, as artifacts have been found dating back 6,000 years at this meeting point of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. On an Oral History Tour of the area, your group will be led by Indigenous elders on a 90-minute walk that takes you from the St. Boniface Cathedral, over the Esplanade Riel, and throughout The Forks, all while relating the histories of the region's Indigenous peoples (seasonal and must be booked in advance). One of Canada's newest — and greenest — museums, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) takes visitors on a journey through the evolution, celebration and future of human rights from Canada and around the world. The Museum contains numerous exhibits that illuminate the connection between human rights and our planet's sustainability, while posing questions like "how does a healthy environment contribute to human rights?" The Museum itself has won numerous awards for its eco-conscious design, including the 2015 Leadership Award for the Advancement of Accessible Environment Design and the 2015 Award of Excellent in Accessible Environmental design. Group tours are available in English and French on a daily basis. DAY 2 Assiniboine Park Zoo's Journey to Churchill is both the world's foremost Arctic species exhibit, along with being home to a state-of- the-art research facility on northern animals and ecosystems. At its Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre your group will learn from experts about polar bear conservation efforts, polar bear denning, diets and behaviours, along with climate change issues that are effecting bears in the wild. Researchers at the Centre use the controlled Zoo environment to perfect field research techniques and are engaged in Photo Courtesy of Oak Hammock Marsh Canadian Museum for Human Rights: William Au ITINERARIES
