WINNIPEG
Lower Fort Garry
National Historic Site
Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site is an
iconic 19th century fur trade-era fort poised
above the high-water mark of Manitoba's
infamous Red River. The fort's newly refurbished
stone walls and sturdy historic buildings were
established in the eastern edge of the vast
Canadian prairies. An amazing setting where
tour groups and families can come to connect
with history, however, in summer 2018 significant
infrastructure restoration projects will affect the
site. The good news is, this work will ensure the
site is preserved for generations to come.
Lower Fort Garry is where important treaties
with our region's First Nations groups were
made. It was also the first training centre for
the North-West Mounted Police, and in later
years it became Manitoba's first prison and
insane asylum.
As part of the Government of Canada's Federal
Infrastructure Investment program, the site's
buildings and grounds are being restored to
preserve its storied history and heritage. Be
advised that the site will be heavily impacted
by the infrastructure work this year, and we
encourage visitors to call in advance to avoid
any inconvenience. The phone number is:
204.785.6050. In the meantime, plan ahead for
your trip in 2019 when the site is expected to
be fully open and refreshed for visitors to learn
about the diverse history and culture this place
embodies, including the important story and
contributions of Indigenous people.
The fort offers ample free motorcoach parking
and complimentary admission for a tour escort
and driver. Programming and visitor services are
offered in both English and French. A restaurant,
gift shop, facility rentals are also available
on site.
