From Notes to reels The Winnipeg Folk Festival was established in 1974. Originally planned to be a one-time event to celebrate Winnipeg's centennial, this annual event is one of the oldest and largest folk festivals in the world. Neil Young, Chantal Kreviazuk and Randy Bachman – these are just some of the top Canadian music icons that have called Winnipeg home and helped contribute to the city's reputation for its strong music scene. Winnipeg actor/screenwriter Nia Vardalos' 2002 movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding stayed in theatres for nearly a year, grossing an astounding $368 million worldwide. Today, it holds the title as the most successful indie film and remains one of the most notable, and profitable, romantic-comedies of all time.
