As snow blankets the city in sparkling white, visitors can take in an authentic winter adventure. Here's a sampling of some of the unique activities visitors can try while in Winnipeg. NEW Ice Castles at Parks Canada Place at The Forks is a dazzling winter phenomenon that brings fairytales to life. They are built entirely by hand using hundreds of thousands of icicles placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains. To be confirmed again for 2019. Work on your "snow-vasana" at the Fire & Ice festival by practicing yoga on a frozen lake, followed by s'mores and wild bush tea over a roaring fire and craft- making at FortWhyte Alive. Two Canadian passions collide with invention of "Croki-curl" set up at The Forks, which blends the popular tabletop game of crokinole with curling. Pedal around town with ease by renting a fat bike available at White Pine Bicycle Co. at The Forks. Skate along the Red River Mutual Trail, one of the world's longest skating trails, test out your curling skills at one of the rinks on the river, and stop for photo ops at warming huts designed by architects dotting the trail. Warm up from the cold with a steamy hamam treatment at the luxurious Ten Spa, or unwind in saunas and hot pools at Thermëa by Nordik Spa-Nature. "Surf" on snow during a kiteboarding session at Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre. Dine on a frozen river at RAW: almond pop-up restaurant. Festival du Voyageur, Western Canada's largest outdoor winter celebration, channels the spirit of Manitoba's fur trading past, celebrating the culture, art, food, music and dance of Métis and Franco-Manitoban adventurers. Sample downtown eats during A Moveable Feast: Winter Cycling Tour offered in early February, where you'll cycle along the river trail and enjoy cuisine with wintry views. Admire Arctic species as they play in the snow in Journey to Churchill at Assiniboine Park Zoo. Rent skis and glide along groomed trails at Windsor Park Nordic Centre. Ride in a two-horse open sleigh and see these massive horses in action at Assiniboine Park Zoo's McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre.
