16 2017 Annual Report Advanced Manufacturing Working Group In partnership with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), EDW worked to formalize its promotion of the advanced manufacturing sector and its importance in growing Manitoba's economy. Capital Region Economic Research Project The multi-year Capital Region economic research project continued to be an EDW focus, which included gathering evidence-based information on the key drivers of our regional economy. The results of this project will inform how, as a region, we can better formulate economic development strategies, which will lead to better decision making and greater economic growth. Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) – Smart 21 As the lead author of Winnipeg's submission to the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) for 2018, EDW was successful in advancing Winnipeg to the ICF's long list of Smart 21 cities in the world. EDW leveraged a broad cross section of community stakeholders including its Winnipeg Smart City Caucus to complete the Smart 21 proposal. This is the sixth time that the ICF has recognized Winnipeg in its Smart 21 Cities list since 2011. EDW submitted its application to advance in ICF's designation for 2018's Smart City of the Year, and has since been recognized as a Top 7 Intelligent Community finalist for the year. Amazon HQ2 RFP In October EDW, as a member of Team Manitoba (a group comprised of the Province of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg and Economic Development Winnipeg), submitted a bid to be the home for Amazon's second headquarter location. The bid was accompanied by a video produced in-house which featured Obby Khan touring Alexa (an Android Echo device) around Winnipeg. Blog and Website Revamp A newsroom blog was launched to promote Winnipeg success stories, and EDW's corporate website was revamped to achieve better navigation. Smart Winnipeg Caucus A multi-stakeholder initiative, the Winnipeg Smart City Caucus continues to focus on leveraging open data and big data analytics to improve efficiency and investment decisions at the government level. The objective of the caucus is to move the community toward making decisions using intelligent/ smart community principles to create a more competitive environment for investment.
