As Manitoba's largest summer festival, the Red
River Ex attracts over 220,000 visitors, annually
in June, who are entertained, informed and
engaged in a wide variety of family entertainment;
agricultural displays and competitions; great food;
community performances; 10 days of free concerts;
educational activities; art, photography and quilt
competitions; hobby displays as well as the world's
largest travelling midway. The park is operated by
the Red River Exhibition Association, a not-for-profit
organization. The Ex was started in 1952 and in 1997,
it moved to its present location. The total amount of
land owned at the western edge of Winnipeg is 480
acres (1.9 km2). Red River Exhibition Park was built as
a multi-purpose facility on only 90 of those acres
leaving almost 400 acres (1.6 km2) for future growth
and expansion. Plans are currently underway for new
development over the next 30 years.
