Culinary While we could write a novel on Winnipeg's celebrated and continually evolving culinary scene, we thought it best to focus on all the outside acclaim that The Peg has been garnering over the past few years along with a few other worldly gems that we just needed to share. Get reading, and bring your appetite. Nationally Acclaimed In 2018, Winnipeg generated even more rave reviews from across Canada. For starters, on the newly famed Canada's 100 Best Restaurants list, Segovia (484 Stradbrook Avenue) — Winnipeg's foremost tapas restaurant that has been wowing dinners since 2009 — broke into the top 50. "It's the more contemporary tapas offerings that explains why you'll find a lineup here on any given night of the week," stated its entry, which pretty much sums up why this handsome house in Osborne Village continues to be a must visit for culinary enthusiasts in the city. Another noteworthy Winnipeg room on both the 2017 and 2018 Canada's 100 Best Restaurants list is deer + almond (85 Princess Street), where chef Mandel Hitzer and his team let their imaginations continue to run wild, presenting whimsical dishes that often defy genres. Of course, you also can't mention deer + almond without addressing RAW:almond, Hitzer's four-week pop up restaurant project on the frozen Assiniboine River (January to February) that he puts on with architect designer Joe Kalturnyk. RAW:almond has brought in some of North America's best chefs to collaborate in Winnipeg, while this one-of-a-kind culinary experience has been celebrated in the New York Times, LA Times, Globe and Mail, Condé Nast Traveler, USA Today, Maclean's, and Eater — to name but a few. Canada's other big culinary publication is Air Canada's Best New Restaurant list, which chef Scott Bagshaw continually graces. After Enoteca (1670 Corydon Avenue), Bagshaw's small plates restaurant that mixes influence from northern Italy to France to Spain scored the #9 spot on the list in 2015. In 2016, Bagshaw's Máquè (909 Dorchester), which leans more toward the flavours of Asia, made the contenders list, while this year Passero, his stylish Italian restaurant located right within The Forks Market once again has him in the top 30-restaurant contender's list. Another restaurant to have recently made the Air Canada Best New Restaurant list (2017) is Clementine (123 Princess Street), Winnipeg's premiere — and always busy — brunch spot. The Globe and Mail stated, "Can a brunch restaurant also be considered one of the country's best restaurants? Judging by Clementine's impeccable consistency and continually ingenious creations, it certainly could." The other Winnipeg restaurant that made Air Canada's list (2018) is The Oxbow (557 Osborne Street). Here, the majority of the ingredients used in the share plates are grown by one of the co-owners (Will Bergmann of Bergman Farms) before being treated carefully by chef Sean Bernard. The wine list is also studded with interesting natural selections while the craft cocktail list too is quite robust.
