21 Festival du Voyageur is the largest winter festival in Western Canada. Held over 10 days every February, the festival celebrates the city's francophone, Métis and fur trading history with live music, cuisine, snow sculptures, historic re-enactments, and all manner of merriment. Métis leader Louis Riel was hanged in 1885 for treason after leading the North-West Resistance. Today, opinions of Riel have changed and many consider this man to be the "Father of Manitoba." His life is commemorated during Louis Riel Day, which is a provincial holiday celebrated annually on the third Monday of February. French Connection Université de Saint- Boniface/St. Boniface University is the only French language university in Western Canada. Courtesy Dan Harper Photogrfaphy Winnipeg-born author Gabrielle Roy was arguably the best- known French writer in Canada.
