22 Baldur R. Stefansson, who was a plant scientist at the University of Manitoba, is dubbed "The Father of Canola." He helped develop a variety of rapeseed into an edible oil which would become popular the world over. Canola is in fact an acronym for "Canada oil, low acid." Bringing Home The Bacon Winnipeg has a sweet tooth. Confectioners Mordens' of Winnipeg, the Nutty Club and OMG's, all internationally known candy companies, started here. RAW: almond is the world's only pop-up restaurant located on a frozen river. This popular annual culinary event runs for three weeks in the middle of winter, where star chefs serve up gourmet multi-course meals inside a temporary heated structure built on the city's Red River Mutual Trail. All packaging for bacon sold in Canada and 1/4 of the bacon packaging in the United States is made in Winnipeg at Winpak Ltd.
