Seven Oaks House Museum Constructed in the 1850s entirely of oak logs, this original Inkster homestead houses artifacts of the Red River settlers. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours are available. Admission by donation. Season runs from Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day. 115 Rupertsland Boulevard – North End tel: 204.339.7429 Transcona Historical Museum w The Transcona Historical Museum's mission is to maintain and promote the history, stories and community spirit of Transcona. Exhibits rotate annually, and feature highlights of the extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and archival records that together tell the story of Transcona. Thanks to the donations of Transconian collectors, it also has special natural and cultural history collections that include more than 8,000 moths and butterflies from around the world and 3,500 archaeological and First Nations artifacts from throughout Manitoba. Educational programs and group presentations may be arranged by appointment. Ukrainian Museum of Canada w The museum is located in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. It is a Winnipeg landmark featuring a Ukrainian-Baroque architectural style with an exterior mosaic by Leo Mol, a carved icon screen wall and stained glass windows. The museum houses a collection of Ukrainian folk arts and crafts, a library and gift shop. Open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July through August. Other times by appointment only by calling 204.334.5267. 1175 Main Street – North End tel: 204.582.1018 www.htuomc.org Upper Fort Garry w The fort, built between 1834-37, was the centre of trade for an area that was larger than Eastern Europe. It was the administrative and judicial body of the Red River Settlement, which was governed by the Hudson's Bay Company. It was also the place where Louis Riel formed the provisional government, which led to Manitoba entering Confederation as a province. Upper Fort Garry was demolished between 1881-89. A fundraising campaign is underway to create the Upper Fort Garry Heritage Park and Interpretive Centre. In 1978, the Trappists moved to a site near Holland, Manitoba, to protect their contemplative life from the effects of urban sprawl. Fire gutted the vacated church and residential wing five years later. Information about the Trappist monks and the monastery is on display at the remaining ruins. The former Trappist Monastery Guesthouse, now called The St. Norbert Arts Centre, is home to many resident artists and is located on the grounds. tel: 204.987.4359 Take your imagination to the sky! You'll discover great ideas (and not so great ideas) in flight and a true appreciation for the adventuring spirit of Canada's aviation legends. Check the website for visiting exhibits and aircraft, as well as special events and guided tours. Or simply relax in the observation room and watch the air traffic on the international airport runways. Kids (2-12) will enjoy Skyways—the interactive play area where they can fly a plane, challenge the wind, spot a flying saucer and still be back in time for dinner. Gift shop on site. Free parking. Winnipeg Police Museum w Displays and artifacts are featured relating to the history of the Winnipeg Police Force dating from its beginning in 1874 to the present. See the Countess of Dufferin – the first steam locomotive on the prairies, also diesel and electric locomotives, rolling stock, maintenance-of-way equipment, the history of CN, CP, City of Winnipeg rail, the construction of the Hudson Bay Railway, the struggle of women to enter the railroad industry, and a large HOgauge model layout. Finish with a visit to the railroad-oriented gift shop. The museum is open May 1 to October 31 daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday & Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in March and November.
