Winnie the Bear statue Did you know the famous children's character Winnie the Pooh was named after Winnipeg? There is a statue commemorating "Winnie the Bear" and her owner, Captain Harry Colebourn, at Assiniboine Park Zoo. Birds Hill Provincial Park w Featuring hills and ridges formed by ancient glaciers, this 35-square kilometre park has a lake, oak and aspen forests, native prairie wildflowers, deer, waterfowl and songbirds. Facilities include camping, swimming, picnic sites, a riding stable, a restaurant, a beach concession and a convenience store. There are 30 kms of trails for walking and cross-country skiing and 7.2 kms of paved bicycle and rollerblading trails. Every July, the park hosts the Winnipeg Folk Festival. 24 km northeast of Winnipeg on Highway 59 – just outside Winnipeg (north) FortWhyte Alive w Kildonan Park Experience outdoor activities year round such as fishing, paddling, hiking, wildlife watching, snowshoeing, skating, cross-country skiing, and the super Richardson run toboggan slide. 2015 Main Street – North Main (West Kildonan) Winnipeg's award-winning 640-acre nature centre showcases a prairie bison herd, five lakes, seven km of forest trails and floating wetland boardwalks, biodiversity garden, Prairie Dog Town, Prairie Partners burrowing owl exhibit, Planet H2O exhibit, touch museum, Aquarium of the Prairies, family tree house, birdfeeding stations, Pioneer Sod House, Tipi Encampment, the Nature Shop, and Buffalo Stone Café. Open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended summer and fall hours. 1961 McCreary Road – Tuxedo Walk among some of the oldest and largest trees in Manitoba, through a formal garden and Hansel & Gretel's "Witch Hut". The park is also home to Canada's longest-running outdoor theatre, Rainbow Stage. An Olympic-sized swimming pool and plenty of picnic tables and barbeque pits are available in summer.
